It’s really hard to choose one specific painter as my favorite. That being said Vincent Van Gogh holds a special place in my heart. Prior to my introduction to Van Gogh (and true understanding of his work), I always approached my artwork on a very literal level. What I saw is what I painted (or sketched). I concerned myself with an accuracy to detail that’s really only applicable to photography. Van Gogh really emphasized to me that my artwork should a representation of not only my own feelings but the feelings and connotations of the people, trees, sky, ect. that are represented in the composition. In the same vein, Van Gogh’s works taught me to experiment with thicker and thinner brush strokes.
Additionally Van Gogh showed me how important colors can be. Whether it be the intense clash of reds and greens like in ,”The Night Cafe” or the highly saturated colors in, “The Red Vineyard”, Van Gogh has a way of setting an intense mood through the use of his color pallet. Through Van Gogh, I’ve found my own way of choosing a color pallet that truly expresses what I want to convey in the composition.
Also, his life was very interesting and there are a ton of really cool movies about his struggle with mental health (as with most famous artists).
I to love Van Gogh. Is this an artist homage interpretation of the Night Cafe? The original is at Yale, https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/12507
Check out the difference.
